OK...another in the Beatles travels of yesteryear. I have a cold so anyway I did this this morning Wed the 6th. One guitar track played all the way through, one lead vocal sung all the way through, one harmony vocal all the way through, one simple lead which is the first lead ever performed by these hands! Close as I could get it. Not a VOM1T but fun.

garthman Comments:

It's been a while since I did a Leonard Cohen song so here is my version of 'The Gypsy's Wife' which appeared on the 1979 album 'Recent Songs' (one of Cohen's best albums IMO).

Played on my nylon string dreadnought. One take with my computer mike via Audacity.

PS. If you don't already have it, go and buy the DVD 'Live In London' recorded at the O2 arena during his 2008 tour.

FussenKuh Comments:

Ahhhh... the first VOM of 2010. I can't wait to check out everyone's tunes.

As for my entry this month, truth be told, I wouldn't have known that this song existed if it wasn't for the fact that it was frequently played by Axl Rose during Guns 'n Roses concerts as an intro to November Rain.

The song is completely piano driven. However, I neither have a piano nor can I play the piano. So, I decided to record an acoustic guitar version instead... complete with some less-than-impressive vocals.

My initial goal was to create a one-take rendition. However, I couldn't get my mic to play nicely with both my voice and guitar. So, I ended up having to record guitar and vocals separately.

As always, it ain't perfect... but, at least it's short ;) Any feedback (good, bad or ugly) is always appreciated.

I hope someone enjoys it!

It's a praise/worship song titled Let's All Praise the Lord, based on Psalm 150. I had the melody and chorus for quite a while before I figured out what to do about the verses. It's basically a two chord wonder, D and G, with variations of those two chords.

This is an original titled: I Miss You

It's a poem that my sister wrote back when she was a teenager. She asked me to turn it into a song for her, and this is how it came out.

I just got finished recording it using my new American Standard Strat through my Digitech RP150 effects pedal and into my fishman SoloAmp. The output of the SoloAmp is going into the mic in on my camcorder so I could get better sound.

I know it's not acoustic guitar, but I hope you like it still.

Happy F'ing New Year

http://www.box.net/shared/tgdhjfaz4q

Breakup song. What more can I say. Written at 7am 1/1/10, whilst enjoying a hangover following events described in verse three.

5 tracks: Vocal, MexiStrat, Hummingbird, mando, tambo. All but Strat into AT2020 mike to a Fostex VF80 recorder (minor EQ tweaking here and there), m4a output file converted to mp3.

Lyrics:

Happy Fucking New Year
©Michael David Martin 2010

Back in the summer of oh-oh nine
Love was blooming like weeds
Across the border/and in all the cracks of the parking lots
The king is dead/long live the queen
God bless the lady on the magazine
And God love the girl who machine-gunned all my dreams

Cup of coffee/cup of tea
I like you and you might like me
If I can learn your language/make you understand my words
Me and you/birds and the bees
Great wall of China and the deep blue sea
I don’t believe in you/I don’t believe/anything you wrote me

I broke all your rules of engagement
I forgot to edit my reply
You don’t like the terms of our endearment
And neither do I

We went skiing under a blue moon
New Years Day/three A. M.
I couldn’t keep up with the likes of you and him
I tried real hard/stay on the track
Me and my good friend Yukon Jack
So easy to fall/so hard to get back up

I broke all your rules of engagement
I forgot to edit my reply
You don’t like the terms of our endearment
And neither do I

So I changed my mind and decided to record something anyway. Still attempting to change music genres I bought myself a Mel Bay music book on Friday (Best Traditional tunes) and from it put together a version on Buckdancers Choice (the first part anyway) this being short I added on Westcoast blues by Blind Blake to create a melody (I mean medley).

So here we have Westcoast Buckdancers.

Well, here goes! This is one of mine from way back (but seldom played - for reasons given elsewhere). The melody is nowhere near as good as the one that 'Melodious / Pitar' wrote for it - but I haven't learned that yet - Melodeous' (excellent) version was, however, posted on HCAF a month or so a go (by Krash). I thought is might be a good starter for my VOM1T debut.

Recorded, this morning (after celebrating the beloved's birthday until late last night), using a Tascam US122L; Simultaneous Guitar (Ibanez LE300) & Vocal using sEX1 Mic; mixed using Krystal Audio Engine and converted to MP3 format using Audacity.

Just finished recording this one.
This is a collaboration with a lyricist.
She sent me lyrics and I changed and added some of my own.

Original piece played on a 1978 spruce/Indian Manuel Velazquez classical guitar:

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=901761&songID=8567190

Recording chain is a pair of Audio Technica 4041's into Presonus Firebox into Cubase on an iMac. A little bit of compression and reverb were added in Cubase.

If anyone is interested in the music for this piece, I wrote it out and can post it.

Hey Everyone....Happy 2010,

I didn't have much time to work on something this month, but I was playing around with my new micprophones and recorded this, just incase I needed something for the VOM. I love these mics but I have a lot to learn about home recording. These mics are so hot they pick up everything...breathing, computer noice etc... I managed to EQ out the computer noice but not my breathing. Like I said I have a ton to learn, but this is going to be so much fun!

So for my entry this month it's a little Pink Floyd instrumental cover of 'Is There Anybody Out There'. I played it on my Silvercreek T-170. Hope you all like it, and I 'm lookiing forward to hearing all y'alls stuff!

True VOM1T of a song I have no business singing...

There’s a song I absolutely love, yet at the same time know that it’s completely out of my league in terms of singing. Still, I felt the desire to sing it, so here we are. My deepest apologies to Ronnie Dunn, who, on top of being one of if not the best singer in country music today, also had the talent to write this tune.

One of mine, recorded last Thursday on my Fender parlor. It's just loud enough when I have my computer and the YouTube player cranked--no idea how to boost the volume on a Mac.

This was not my first take, but it was the first take I finished without the mic cord rubbing against the guitar strings, my wife yelling down the stairs, or the cat jumping on my desk. That still counts, right?

Greetings

Here is my submission for this month. The song is called Daybreak Awaits and it is from my second CD 'Last Sun'. It's kind of a bouncy acoustic rock song, not a real barn burner but nothing to take a nap by either. This wasn't exactly a once and done recording, I made a practice run that was perfect, then proceeded to have a series of brain farts on the first 4 tries. Old age, remember it while you still can. If you go to my Soundclick page, the CD version of the song has both lead and rhythm guitars and 2 bass tracks. It was a bit of an experiment, some folks liked it, others didn't but I think it sounds neat. But that's just me

Anyways
Enjoy
Tony

My entry is one of the songs that I recently had copyrighted.

> I Love You More
I Love You More, ©2009.

I have a labeled artist currently considering this song, so I'm kinda excited. Just have to wait a bit longer to find out whats going to happen with it.

Anyway, let me know. I didn't write it for my voice. Actually a strong country voice would work equally as well. The score actually has other instruments in it, especially in the bridges.

Using standard tuning, my RK RO-26 into playing and singing into an H4, saved as an MP3.

Here are the lyrics......

I love you more
Than all the stars in heaven
I love you more
Than you’ll ever know
I love you more
Than you can imagine
Yet I want
To love you more.

If there’s a day
I’ve spent without you
If there’s a day
You’re not in my heart
If there’s a day
I’ve forgotten to tell you
Then I need
To love you more.

Lead………

As days go by
It only gets stronger
As days go by
I feel the need
As days go by
You make me remember
That I have
To love you more.

Then suddenly
My heart filled with sorrow
Then suddenly
My world ceased to be
Then suddenly
I had to remember
What had happened to me.

Lead

I can’t believe
You’ve gone off to Heaven
I can’t believe
What I can’t see
I can’t believe
And my mind isn’t willing
I still need you to be.

Here is one I had fun learning. I went to a writers site to better learn how to write a story song. And this is the result. Written/recorded a few years ago. recorded in one sitting with my acoustic electric guitar in one take with one vocal track and one guitar track.

> Bob Mcgee JR

{A]Bobby was a little boy
he loved his mama well
he always did as he was tolde
he liked to ring the sunday bell

[A]now bobby was a wonder
he could play most anything
you'd see him down at the music store
folkes liked to hear him sing

[A]young bob would play them old olde songs
surrounded by a growin' crowd
nobody even whispered
he did'nt have to sang real loude

[b]and he could
hit them high notes
and ring them low notes
and hit all the jazz notes in between
he was a wonder
that boy from down under
my son bobby junior

[A/D]I had to work late
I was far from home
a big storm blew in
from the sea

[A/D]the sea took my son bobby

[C]Nowdays
I don't play much
and i don't do much
'cept drink island rum
and stare out to sea
and I wonder
if my boy had thundre
would he have turned out much like me

Dropping in for a short visit.

> Stayin' Song

Since so many other muti-track tunes have been posted I decided to put up my remake of a Shel Silverstein tune, Stayin' Song, from the Dakota Night CD. It is all acoustic with the exception of the bass guitar and, keeping somewhat in the context of the VOM1T, the majority of the tracks, if not all, were done in one take. Memory fails me there....

Hills Around Here. Picked up from a line in Texico Chapter 2. Wrote this quickly. True VOM1T. Zoom recorded. First original I wrote in a month so it was good to get it out. Really, a song regarding perseverence in the repeated face of tough circumstances. Or even silence. Keep on listening. One day, or night, you will hear.

> Hills Around Here

we got hills around here
we got hills around here
been walking the smooth road my dear
we got hills around here

ain't no easy days here
ain't no easy days here
and nobody gonna shed a tear
ain't no easy days here

the fruits all gone from this vine
the fruits all gone from this vine
don't know why i'm still trying
the fruits all gone from this vine

keep talking and i'll try to hear
keep talking and i'll try to hear
haven't heard anything in years
keep talking and i'll try to hear

we got hills around here
we got hills around here
been talking the smooth road my dear
we got hills around here
